Tile Finishes
The beauty of small batch handmade production, is that no batch is ever entirely the same. To help understand our glazes, they are categorised by likelihood of variation.
However stable a tile colour, each batch will always have natural variations across each batch. To ensure consistency we recommend laying out all tiles together in advance of installation to evenly distribute these and create a consistent appearance.
Stable
Natural clay colour and streaks from handmaking process can be seen in each batch.
Blush Unglazed
Glossy Tan
Terracotta Unglazed
White Textured
White Smooth
Sunshine
Black Enamel on White
Moderate
Changes in hue with the occasional “aura” can, for example, cause greens to drift into blues and yellows from chemical reactions during kiln firing.
Bottle Green
Toffee
Cobalt
Indigo
Volatile
Every tile will appear different than the rest within its batch. Drastic colour changes expected.
Nest Egg
Highland Green
Verdigris
Because our tiles are handmade by artisans, they have unique characteristics that must be taken into consideration before purchase.
Samples
3 weeks lead time
We can’t ensure exact shade matches with provided samples due to the handmade nature of our clay tiles, which have natural variations.
To make a decision, we suggest ordering a variety of sizes and colours as samples.
Samples purchased within 3 months of ordering can help maintain clay consistency. You can also send an approved colour control sample to our studio for guidance.
Variation
Handmade Tile Characteristics
Ceramic tiles may develop hairline cracks over time, known as “crazing,” which is a natural occurrence and doesn’t affect their performance.
Our handmade tiles have unique variations, as each batch is crafted by artisans. Clay’s natural variability means colour and texture may differ from samples provided.
Due to their handmade nature, some bowing and warping may occur, but we ensure acceptable quality in every tile we send.
Sealants
Boiled Linseed Oil & Others
We will seal samples and full orders with our Boiled Linseed Oil.
Boiled linseed oil creates a matte, water sealed layer that maintains the iconic burnt terracotta colouring. These tiles can be sealed with beeswax after installation, and should be maintained with boiled linseed oil and wax every 3-4 years.
Alternatively, you can order your tiles & samples without sealant, and test a sealant of your choice on them.
Lead Times
8-12 weeks
Because we are a small artisan studio, our lead times depend entirely on how busy we are. We always recommend giving us advance notice if your project is 350+ tiles, so we can book you in. Samples take 3 weeks to produce, and larger orders can be anywhere between 8-12 weeks.
Sizing
Artisan made, therefore variable
Sizing referred to is variable and not the actual size. Due to the handcrafted nature of these tiles, dimensions are approximate.
Tile sizes will never be perfectly square, and may vary by up to 4mm. Often we find that variations will be consistent throughout each batch.
Irregularities across the surface are common, and tiles may not always be perfectly flat.
Use
Interior unless specified
The tiles are considered for indoor use only as they are not freeze-tolerant. Two & A Half Dimensions are suitable for bathrooms, kitchen and shower room walls when properly installed on a suitable substrate using an adhesive appropriate for the substrate. They are not suitable for flooring, and we recommend not using relief tiles for kitchen counter tops.
Calculate your tile quantity
To find out the total tiles needed for your space, enter the height and width in centimetres. Our calculator always rounds up to the highest number. E.g if you need 12.3 tiles our calculator will say you need 13.
